USA Powerlifting Certified Coaches General Liability Policy.
The policy will provide coverage to protect insured USA Powerlifting certified coaches from third party claims of bodily injury, property damage, personal injury and advertising injury due to alleged negligence arising from coaching or officiating activities.
The policy will cost $55 for $1,000,000 coverage for 1 calendar year (1/1/2018-12/31/2018). Any purchases made after Dec. 21st will be processed for the following year.
The General Liability and Participant Accident coverage provided through USA Powerlifting is structured to cover activities that fall within the scope of USA Powerlifting-sanctioned coaching and events. A few key points:
- Scope of a Club Coach: Coverage is intended for coaching, instructing, or supervising athletes in connection with powerlifting training, techniques, and competition under the USA Powerlifting framework.
- Outside Activities: If you are training clients outside of powerlifting (for example, general fitness, personal training, or coaching another sport like strongman), those activities are not automatically included in the USAPL insurance program.
- Who is covered: Coverage applies to your coaching activities as a USAPL-certified coach, regardless of whether the individual athlete is a USAPL member at the time of training. However, coverage must still fall within the definition of “covered activities” (i.e., powerlifting-focused coaching consistent with your certification).
- Comparison to your personal trainer policy: A personal trainer liability policy is generally broader in scope — covering you for training clients in multiple disciplines, whether powerlifting, general fitness, or strongman. The USAPL coverage is narrower and purpose-built around powerlifting & members.
In short:
- If you drop your personal trainer policy, you would only have coverage for coaching that clearly aligns with your role as a USAPL-certified coach (powerlifting training).
- Activities like strongman coaching or general fitness training would not be covered under the USAPL policy.
If you anticipate continuing to train clients outside of powerlifting, it would be best to maintain your personal trainer policy alongside the USAPL coverage.
